The Wheelchair Accessible Carriage

The Bird-in-Hand Wheelchair Accessible Carriage is primarily manufactured for use in therapeutic driving centers and for drivers and riders who use wheelchairs. The front seat is removable so that a wheelchair occupant can either drive or ride. The rear ramp can be stored in an upright position, which allows a wheelchair occupant to face forward or sideways in the back of the carriage with an assistant.

The Wheelchair Accessible Carriage offers wonderful therapy to those who have limited mobility. Driving a horse and carriage has a calming effect that is not present when traveling in motorized vehicles.

With the little town of Oracle, Arizona in the background, Mabel Looby drives the Miniature Horses Moe and Joe to the Bird-in-Hand Wheelchair Accessible Carriage. She is a client in the equine-assisted therapy program of Little Hooves and Big Hearts. This nonprofit organization helps children with special needs and seniors to improve their physical and emotional well being through interaction with specially trained miniature horses. Through equine therapy, clients of Little Hooves & Big Hearts can achieve increased muscle strength, joint mobility, balance and coordination; improved communication and perceptual skills; greater self-confidence and trust; stronger connections to the physical world and to other people; and lessened feelings of loneliness and dependency. Founded in 2007, this truly is a heart-warming outreach to children and seniors! "It is always a beautiful day when Mabel comes to drive! This day was cool and overcast, but lovely. The back seat of this carriage is removable for chair loading and has locking brakes for safety.
